Step in. Keep learning going. Grow in the mountains.

When a Lead Teacher is out for an extended stretch, the Long-Term Substitute keeps a classroom steady — teaching the planned curriculum, holding routines and relationships, and giving students consistency until their teacher returns. For 2026–27, HRCS anticipates a long-term assignment beginning in late November or mid-December to cover a staff parental leave, expected to last at least three months.

Unlike a day-to-day substitute, the Long-Term Substitute owns the full teaching role for the length of the assignment: planning from the teacher’s materials, assessing student work, communicating with families, and partnering with the instructional team.

What You’ll Do

Classroom & Instruction

  • Teach the assigned multi-age cohort (K–2, 3–5, or 6–8) following the Lead Teacher’s plans and the HRCS interdisciplinary, outdoor-centered model
  • Deliver lessons primarily outdoors for a significant part of the school day, consistent with HRCS practice and mountain weather
  • Maintain daily routines, classroom culture, and behavior expectations so students keep momentum during their teacher’s absence
  • Prepare and adjust lessons as needed, grade student work, and keep the year-long learning portfolios current

Student Support

  • Support students with IEPs, 504s, and ALPs in partnership with the Student Services Coordinator and SPED team
  • Keep the classroom safe and inclusive for every learner

Family & Team Partnership

  • Communicate with families about day-to-day learning and celebrations, coordinating with the Instructional Anchor on anything significant
  • Participate in team planning and professional learning during the assignment, and support a smooth hand-back when the teacher returns

Administrative

  • Take attendance, follow HRCS health, safety, and emergency procedures, and maintain accurate records

We’re Looking for Someone Who…

  • Holds a valid Colorado teaching license or Colorado substitute authorization preferred (teaching license strongly preferred for a long-term assignment)
  • Brings classroom experience and is comfortable owning a classroom for an extended period
  • Is enthusiastic about multi-age, outdoor, and project-based learning
  • Communicates clearly with students, families, and colleagues
  • Can commit to the full term of the assignment (anticipated at least three months)
  • Believes in HRCS’s mission of outdoor, community-centered learning

  •  The selected candidate must hold and maintain a current, valid Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license and current CPR/First Aid certification, and must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9).
  •  HRCS employees are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect under C.R.S. § 19-3-304.
