During Burro Days in Fairplay
Run. Laugh. Give Back.
High Rockies Community School invites you to join The Great Llama Race—a high-energy mountain-town tradition where teams, llamas, costumes, laughter, and a little bit of chaos come together during Burro Days in Fairplay, Colorado.
Now in its 27th year, this beloved community fundraiser returns fully led by HRCS. Expect creativity, community spirit, unforgettable costumes, and a race experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Each team of four gets one llama teammate. The entire team must stay together from start to finish.
Town streets, dirt trails, cheering spectators, and a river crossing through the heart of Fairplay.
Many teams compete just as hard for the costume prize as they do for the finish line. Go all out.
Race finishers, costume winners, most funds raised—and surprise awards announced on race day.
The Great Llama Race is more than just a race—it’s a community-powered fundraiser supporting the students, teachers, and programs of High Rockies Community School.
Funds raised through The Great Llama Race support the general needs of High Rockies Community School, helping us provide meaningful learning experiences for students from preschool through eighth grade.
Help us reach our goal — every dollar supports HRCS students.
Ready to race? Here’s everything you need to know to register.
Funny, punny, themed, coordinated, ridiculous—we want to see it all. Team names and costumes are one of the most anticipated parts of race day.
Go all out with matching themes, mountain-town humor, llama puns, and over-the-top team spirit. The bigger the commitment to the bit, the better.
Registration includes 4 race entries, 4 event T-shirts, and one very opinionated llama teammate.
Registration fees are non-refundable and directly support HRCS students and programs.
The competition is fierce, the costumes are legendary, and the prizes are worth it.
The teams that bring the speed across the finish line.

It takes a village—and a few llama wranglers—to make race day successful.
Volunteer opportunities include:
No. The Great Llama Race is not a timed event, but we do track the order in which teams cross the finish line. Teams of four will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finisher awards. Final race results will be posted on the website following the event.
Teams are traditionally made up of 4 participants, and registration includes 4 race entries and 4 event T-shirts. Teams must have at least 4 participants to qualify for finisher prizes. Got extra hype people? We love that—additional supporters are welcome to fundraise and cheer your team on, but only 4 racers may participate alongside the llama during the race.
Fundraising is the reason this event exists—and yes, it’s part of the competition. Teams are encouraged to aim for $1,000 or more in support of High Rockies Community School. Whether you raise $50 or $5,000, every dollar helps support students, outdoor learning, and meaningful educational experiences at HRCS.
The course is designed to be fun and adventurous—but this is still a mountain-town race at high altitude with a llama. Participants should expect uneven terrain, dirt trails and pavement, a river crossing, and Colorado mountain weather that can change quickly. Come prepared to move, laugh, get a little wet, and maybe be outsmarted by a llama.
Not at all. Some teams race competitively, while others are here for the costumes, fun, and unforgettable memories. The Great Llama Race is designed to be approachable, community-focused, and wildly entertaining for all experience levels. Plus, your team is only as fast as your llama—so choose wisely!
Participants must be 14 years or older to race. Families, friends, and spectators of all ages are encouraged to come cheer teams on and enjoy the festivities.
Absolutely. All are encouraged to participate in The Great Llama Race.
Yes! You can still be part of the llama magic by fundraising without a race team and competing for the Grand Prize. Other ways to join in include donating, volunteering, sponsoring the event, or cheering from the sidelines.
Because The Great Llama Race is a fundraiser supporting High Rockies Community School, registration fees are non-refundable. Your registration directly supports HRCS students, programs, and event costs.
